Lockdown Support
Burnhope Village Support Group has helped many families, all with differing needs and backgrounds, over the time of the pandemic.

As part of a grant from County Durham Community Foundation and National Emergencies Trust, Burnhope Village Support Group has stocks of essential household items and food to give to anyone in our village who finds themselves with less in the purse due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
You do not have to choose between shopping and paying a bill. Let us do the shopping for you!
To order a parcel from us call Cindy on 07749756364. You can also order on behalf of someone else who might not want to ring themselves.

Closed for lockdown
As you probably expected, the Community Centre will be closed from tonight until at least 2 December 2020.
All the groups, the youth club and the gym will be closed.
It is sad when things were just starting to pick up but the safety of our members, volunteers and staff are more important.
We will be doing some Zoom based activities so keep an eye out on the page for that.
Also our AGM next Tuesday 10 November 2020 at 6:00pm will be on Zoom – please message the Centre for joining instructions.

Join us for Pie & Peas, Bingo and raffle.
Bring along your spouse, partner or friend and take part in ‘The Perfect Match’ our own version of the well known game show Mr & Mrs. Will you know enough about each other to win the top prize?
Over 18’s are welcome to bring their own alcohol.
Tickets are priced at £3.50 each and are available from the community centre.
27th November Christmas Lunch with Age UK County Durham
Age UK County Durham is coming to Burnhope Community Centre on Wednesday 27th November 2019 12-2.30pm.
Age UK County Durham will be providing information for the over 50’s about Keeping Safe and Well in Later Life, giving away lots of information packs, providing an update on our Heritage Project.
They will also be asking local residents what they would like to see happening regularly in Burnhope in the New Year.
People are invited to arrive from 12pm to chat to staff and peruse the information stalls, and a 2 course subsidised Christmas lunch will be provided at 1pm for just £2 per person.
Residents can enjoy a Turkey Dinner followed by Christmas Pudding and a fun festive quiz will follow.
All attendees will receive a FREE Recipe Book as well.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Places must be booked for lunch but residents can chat and view the information stalls on a drop in basis from 12-1pm.

Burnhope: The village that refused to die Project Drop In Session 20th August
Drop In Session Tuesday 20 August, 1.00pm – 4pm at Burnhope Methodist Chapel Hut
Burnhope: The village that refused to die is an intergenerational social history project exploring life in the village from the 1840s right through to the present day.
The project aims to bring together younger and older members of the Burnhope Community with a range of exciting events and activities. Time Detectives will work together to investigate the dramatics ups and downs of Burnhope’s history to better understand the village as it stands today.
The project will include research on:
- Mining and the birth of Burnhope in 1840
- The growth of Burnhope and the Co-op movement
- The General Strike, smallpox and the 1926 Miner’s Gala
- Social history and engineering accomplishments, 1927-1950
- The Category ‘D’ notice 1951-1977
- How Burnhope became the village that refused to die
All member of the community are invited to get involved throughout the project.
The success of any community project relies on the enthusiasm, skills and generosity of its residents.
How to get involved
There will be opportunities for all Burnhope residents to get involved in this intergenerational project and Age UK County Durham is particularly looking for volunteers aged over 50, or under 25 to support research and activities alongside local children.
These activities may include:
- Research in the Durham County Record Office
- Arts, crafts and photography
- Outdoor exploration
- Event organisation or support
- Visits to museum and heritage sites
Regular volunteering is great but if you can only offer a few hours, Age UK County Durham would still really appreciate your time.
As a volunteer, Age UK County Durham will provide training and travel expenses where applicable. Volunteers will be well supported throughout.
Other ways to get involved
There will also be opportunities to join Age UK County Durham volunteers for guided walks, craft activities, exhibitions and more.

FREE trip to Beamish Museum – Mon 12 August (Limited places)
Join Age UK County Durham’s Intergenerational Heritage Project 2019-20 for a trip to Beamish Open Air Museum
Monday 12 August, from 9.30am to 4.00pm
Explore the:
- 1900s pit village and colliery
- Edwardian railway station
- Historic shops
- 1940s farm and lots more!
All you need to do is get on the bus in good time and bring a packed lunch (transport and entry included – pick up/drop off point to be confirmed).
Children MUST be accompanied by an adult. Age UK County Durham would really like to encourage grandparents and great grandparents to come along too.
