Age UK launch Burnhope Intergenerational Heritage Project – fancy getting involved?

Burnhope: The village that refused to die is an intergenerational social history project exploring life in the village from the 1840s right through to the present day.

The project aims to bring together younger and older members of the Burnhope Community with a range of exciting events and activities.

Time Detectives will work together to investigate the dramatics ups and downs of Burnhope’s history to better understand the village as it stands today.

The project will include research on:

  • Mining and the birth of Burnhope in 1840
  • The growth of Burnhope and the Co-op movement
  • The General Strike, smallpox and the 1926 Miner’s Gala
  • Social history and engineering accomplishments, 1927-1950
  • The Category ‘D’ notice 1951-1977
  • How Burnhope became the village that refused to die

All member of the community are invited to get involved throughout the project.

The success of any community project relies on the enthusiasm, skills and generosity of its residents.

How to get involved

There will be opportunities for all Burnhope residents to get involved in this intergenerational project and Age UK County Durham is particularly looking for volunteers aged over 50, or under 25 to support research and activities alongside local children.

These activities may include:

  • Research in the Durham County Record Office
  • Arts, crafts and photography
  • Outdoor exploration
  • Event organisation or support
  • Visits to museum and heritage sites

Regular volunteering is great but if you can only offer a few hours, Age UK County Durham would still really appreciate your time.

As a volunteer, Age UK County Durham will provide training and travel expenses where applicable. Volunteers will be well supported throughout.

Other ways to get involved

Throughout the project Age UK County Durham will be looking for residents to share their stories and memorabilia including:

  • Photographs
  • Newspaper cuttings
  • Old diaries

There will also be opportunities to join Age UK County Durham volunteers for guided walks, craft activities, exhibitions and more,

Burnhope Summer Fayre & Fun Dog Show Monday 26th August – come and meet Community Centre Team

From 11.30am on Monday 26th August hosted by Burnhope Partnership at Burnhope Cricket Club

Big thanks to Burnhope Cricket Club for hosting the Summer Fayre and Fun Dog Show again this year – with live music and barbecue later in the afternoon. Something for everyone!

Come and meet representatives from Burnhope Community Centre and Age UK County Durham who are running the Intergenerational Heritage Project 2019-2020.

The Fayre will be opened at 11.30am. Come and enjoy:

– Fun Dog Show
– Kids’ Fancy Dress Competition
– Kids’ sports and Penalty Shoot Out
– Bouncy Castle and inflatables
– Face Painting
– Tug ‘o’ War
– Welly Hoying Competition

For those who like a try at winning something:

Stalls and refreshments include:

– Cricket Club stall with soft drinks and snacks for the kids
– The Cricket Club bar will be open for liquid refreshment.
– Lots of stalls

All dogs must be kept on a lead. Please clear up after your dog.

All funds raised on the day will be put back into our community.

 

Free Maths Course in Burnhope

The Adult Learning & Skills Service is bringing a FREE Maths Course to Burnhope.

This course will be running at Burnhope Community Centre

Wednesdays 9.30am – 12pm

Parent & Toddler Group Launched by Burnhope Mams

Burnhope mams, Eve Glendinning and Clare Ellis came together recently to set up a toddler group for the village. The group meets every Tuesday from 10am till 12pm. Refreshments and crafts are included in the entry price of just £2.

The new volunteers have been successful in sourcing donated toys and equipment for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. Thanks to everyone who donated items.

Eve explained, “We both have the same passion to do something for not only our children but our community and both very excited to get this started. We have so many ideas we want to achieve so please help us and share the Facebook page and tell everyone you know! 😃”

We’d love you to pop in on Wednesday 16th January (times below) to see if you can bring your heart to the development of our village.

Thanks so much to those who are already volunteering their time. They certainly have big hearts!  We know everyone is busy, and so we split the remaining volunteer roles down into small chunks.

We are planning a few different groups and clubs to start in the next few weeks, but we need support from yourselves to be able to carry this out. There are two volunteer sessions that you can pop along to and find out more:

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION SESSIONS

Wednesday 16th January

Drop in from 1pm until 3pm or 6pm until 8pm

The main support we need right now is for reception and admin to allow more classes to be added to our timetable.
